Geek Q

Do you use any software that has a free version that is upgradeable to, or also has, a paid version? (Windows, Mac, Linux, UNIX, whatever.) If so, what is it, and what do you think of the freebie download process and (if you've used it) the upgrade process?

(I'm not talking abut time-bombed trial versions.)

I used a crossword puzzle application on my iPhone called "2 Across LE", which is a free, limited edition of the paid program. After a couple of hoursr of using it, I happily ponied up $5.99 for the full version. I uninstalled the LE version before buying the full version (force of habit), so I don't know what the upgrade process (if any) looked like.

I also use the free version of Softerra's LDAP browser (Windows), and haven't ever bothered to upgrade to the full version because the free version does everything I need it to for LDAP troubleshooting.

OK, so... not really in in-place upgrade.

Did you have any nagware from the lite version?

Again... nagware? Do you know what the upgrade experience would be like? Did you have to identify yourself to Softerra during the instalation or registration process to enable the free version? Were you asked to but not required to? Or neither?

Neither application nagged me to upgrade.

I do not know what the upgrade experience would be like.

I did not have to identify myself to Softerra.

The Softerra website explains why their LDAP Administrator (rather than the LDAP Browser) is needed for a "truly" productive experience.

Hmm, plenty -- mostly random stuff.

Toad (Oracle DB Client) is time-bombed to a certain degree -- but it's un-time-bomb process is pretty benign. It's actually quite mild about bugging for the upgrade process.

Httpwatch (IE plugin) was also quite benign, and the upgrade process didn't leave any nastiness behind.

Almost all the big toys are provided by my clients or IBM (my consulting show is a Partner). I could tell you how much I loathe w/ a passion almost everything about the IBM site, but the download & upgrade process is reasonably basic. (The software itself, is of course, well, the software.)

I used the entire Adobe suite free trial download for about 2 weeks while waiting for them to ship me the real thing, does that count?

Off the top of my head, there's SuperDuper, which I mostly paid for because it worked so well (haven't really used the extra features in the paid version), Wiretap Pro, which had some extra stuff in the paid version that was useful (although it's now Wiretap Studio, with a bunch of extra stuff that I don't care about and haven't upgraded to), and ACID Xpress or whatever it was called before Sony bought it; never paid for the upgrade on it.

I don't remember the upgrade process on any of the ones I did pay for being particularly onerous, so I guess that's good.

Airfoil - (sound to Airport Express) after 2 minutes introduces noise. Buy license, noise no longer happens. Easy upgrade.

I think I used Parallels in demo mode, and then bought.

VisualHub (when it was still supported. Would only transcode the first 2 minutes of a vid. Typing in a code unlocked it.)

iWork Suite. easy in place serial number entry

PhotoCopy (iPhoto to Flickr backup... limited upload res until unlocked) EZ

And several others. The upgrade process is fine and easy.
